They happen slowly – walking through the land, meeting the people, and experiencing everyday life in its most beautiful simplicity. Around the lodge, nature, culture, and community blend into gentle adventures that invite you to pause, explore, and feel part of the place.

Excursions

Beyond the lodge lies a region filled with extraordinary landscapes, wildlife, and breathtaking natural wonders. These excursions invite you to explore the beauty of western Uganda while returning each evening to the peaceful comfort of the lodge.

Farm Tour

At Rukwanzi, we totally agree with Aaron Bertelsen, that ‘there really is no greater pleasure than creating a meal from your own produce, cutting flowers for the table, embracing the seasons, and experiencing the flavor of fruit and vegetables as they should’. Take a tour of our farm with an expanding range of fruits, vegetables and herbs, where nature grows and thrives generously. Right from the doorstep of your chalet, step out into our coffee orchard.

The Farm staff are happy to take you through the story of how we nurture our coffee, the avocadoes, different varieties of bananas and herbs, growing effortlessly and abundantly. It is a refreshing journey through the flavors of the land and a reminder of how close food and nature truly are. You will also be introduced to our Apiary where we take care of our pollinators and sustainably harvest the honey that we use. Our Duuka has some honey for you to take home.

Step into the rhythm of rural life as you help guide the majestic Ankole long-horned cattle across our open fields.

Walk alongside our herdsmen and experience a tradition that has shaped the landscape and culture of these communities for generations. Nine kilometers from Rukwanzi Country Haven, beneath the deep green leaves of the magical Kibale Forest National Park are approximately 1,500 chimpanzees and 120 mammal species including: olive baboons, forest elephants, bush pigs, duikers, and rare antelope species. Kibale National Park, which has been baptized “The Primates Capital”, is renowned for its primates’ diversity, with over 13 different species, such as red colobus, black-and-white colobus, L’Hoest’s monkey, and grey-cheeked mangabey among others. Guided by expert trackers, listen for the calls of chimpanzees before witnessing them move freely through the forest canopy.

Home to Uganda’s tree-climbing lions, and over 95 mammal species, Queen Elizabeth National Park is an iconic destination.  The vast savanna beams with wildlife including the Uganda Kob, Waterbuck, Cape Buffalos, Hyenas and Elephants. Equally breathtaking are the “Mountains of the Moon”, famously known as the Rwenzori Mountains, which stand quietly but boldly at 5,109 meters; creating a picturesque background for the Savana.

As we journey back to and from Rukwanzi Country Haven, we cross the 0-degree latitude line that delicately splits the earth into the Northern and Southern Hemisphere – The Equator. The Equator Monument at Kikorongo visibly represents this site, allowing you to Hemisphere straddle, with one foot in the Northern Hemisphere and the other in the Southern Hemisphere.

The Amabere Ga Nyina Mwiru Caves are among Fort Portal’s most fascinating natural and cultural treasures. According to local legend, the caves are tied to the story of Nyina Mwiru, the daughter of King Bukuku of the Bachwezi Dynasty, whose fate shaped the birth of Ndahura; who later became king. Today, the caves offer a beautiful blend of history, myth, and nature.

Experiences at Rukwanzi Country Haven

A hidden gem, Semuliki offers a unique blend of biodiversity, geological wonders, and cultural richness making it a must-visit destination for adventurers, nature lovers, and birdwatchers. Semuliki is a dense forest and forms part of the great Ituri forest that stretches into the Congo.

One of Uganda’s premier birding destinations, with over 435 recorded bird species, including the spot-breasted ibis, the Congo serpent eagle, the chestnut-flanked goshawk, the Western bronze-naped pigeon and yellow-throated cuckoo.

But perhaps the most famous attraction in this Park are the Sempaya Hot Springs, where boiling water bubbles up from underground, releasing steam. These geothermal springs, some reaching temperatures hot enough to boil eggs, offer a dramatic demonstration of the powerful subterranean forces still shaping the East African Rift. In this Park you will also be able to observe primates, elephants, hippos, and crocodiles in their natural habitat.

Bigodi Wetlands Sanctuary

Bigodi Wetlands Sanctuary sits on the edge of Kibale National Park and rewards a different kind of attention. Where the forest draws visitors for chimpanzees and primate tracking, Bigodi moves at a slower pace — a community-run wetland walk through papyrus swamp and tangled forest edge, guided by local naturalists who know every bird call and fruiting tree.

The birding is exceptional, with over 200 species recorded, and the chances of spotting red-tailed monkeys, black-and-white colobus, or the elusive African civet are genuine rather than promised. It pairs naturally with a Kibale chimpanzee trek, adding a quieter, more grounded half-day to what is otherwise an intense primate-focused itinerary — and the community ownership gives the experience a context and texture that larger-scale conservation areas rarely offer.
